Review by iluvmarillion Broken Barricades, the fifth album of Procol Harum is the one associated most with the playing of Robin Trower. Wilson … Rated #154 in the best albums of 1967, and #7346 of all-time album.. While ''The Worm and the Tree'' is not their best epic song, it's well done instrumentally. Album definitely needed one, along with some more recognition. Like both Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Soft Machine and The Byrds among others, Procol Harum certainly paved the way to the progressive rock to come. The other was recorded for old KZEW radio in Dallas, Texas the same year. Album Rating: 4.0Thanks! Before I finish, I shall warn people of the latest reissue of this album by Salvo. Poor Trower. Album Rating: 3.0That's pretty radio-friendly stuff. I've heard to a couple of their albums and it's really good stuff. Review scores; Source Rating; Allmusic: TeamRock: The Spill Magazine: Novum is the twelfth studio album by Procol Harum, released on 21 April 2017. Thanks for pointing out that error. The other favorites are hard to determine. Of course I didn't expect to hear classic Procol Harum even if the cover art suits them well. Album is an easy 4. Oh no, please no. A Salty Dog is good too. Check this song out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZXNGLvFg_M However, critically Procol Harum was very well recieved, especially among many of their contemporary musicians. Nevertheless, what I just want to add is that Procol Harum amazes me as one of the most consistent art rock groups in history - for years, they've been pumping out album after album, quite a lot of which either are masterpieces or come close; loss of key members like Fisher or Trower didn't really have any serious impact on the individual talents of Brooker as a composer or Reid as a lyricist. The departure of guitarist Robin Trower has meant that there are fewer bluesy licks in the music but new guitarist Mick Grabham is a good replacement who´s playing style to my ears actually suits Procol Harum´s music better. I think the album deserves at least a 2.5 since it's not exactly poor. These guys are really unknown here, I might do some more PH review in the near future. The only problem with the album is that it got overlooked by about 95% of those people who turned the band's debut single, 'A Whiter Shade of Pale', into the all-time best seller it became. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_W67hc6HgQ, Album Rating: 4.0Awesome song. I gave an extra point five since I enjoy R&B... Drummer Barrie James Wilson´s energetic style is a real treat. Genres: Psychedelic Rock, Psychedelic Pop. Songs contain good ideas, but could be more developed or more enticing for most of them. Album Rating: 4.0Good return in the spirit of the 60s, vanderb0b. All hands on deck for a remastered and expanded classic live album; plus an orchestra. Released 24 November 1967 on Regal Zonophone (catalog no. Album Rating: 4.0Yeah, I've listened to Strawbs before (thanks to you). Album Rating: 4.0You should definitely get this, Jethro, I could definitely see you liking this a lot. Never missing an orchestra. I didn't even make it all the way through. I literally had to give it 5 or 6 listens before I heard any good in it, Twig, except for Brooker's voice and decent musicianship. These are treasures. I need to give another spin before rating it. this time I've covered Strawbs - Grave New World (prog folk, I think I've told you about these fellas) Nagrarok surely is gonna put it on the map when he log in, hopefully tomorrow. Shine On Brightly - 1968 Repertoire A (Very Good / Good) Best song: Shine On Brightly. A supreme album from '67, Procol Harum's debut easily sits with Cream's 'Disraeli Gears' and Hendrix's 'Axis Bold as Love' or the Beatles' albums of the day in terms of originality and quality. Procol Harum's albums To be listened to in the spirit in which they were made. @thebhoy LRZ 1001; Vinyl LP). Just heard A Whiter Shade of Pale and realize I need to get this now. "I Told on You" is the best opening track since "Nothing but the Truth", and there's still nothing here as bad as, say "Thin end of the Wedge". Album Rating: 2.5Some of it was good, but I thought that 3-part suite about the tree was just a warmed-over reflection of the great epic songs of their past. Procol Harum’s compositions are, like those of almost any other progressive band, theatrical and, for the most part, complex, but, unlike their contemporaries, the band never descends into pointless meandering and the songs never feel overblown. On the other hand, I sometimes hear some Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, Elbow or Traffic in there. I might check these guys out - the way you describe them makes me feel like they're something I would like. Hope you find something you like in Novum. There's so much more to this band than just A Whiter Shade of Pale. This well-considered review does justice to the music while expressing legitimate doubts about the fit between Pete Brown's lyrics and Gary B's music. I just wish it was more like classic Procol Harum. This is a nice review though--and so true! It made me hope for greatness! This, Shine on Brightly and Grand Hotel are all brilliant albums. Available now. Since I am a loyal fan of the band and rarely play my vinyl anymore, I finally caved in and bought this. From your rating and review, I see I didn't really miss anything. [Review] Procol Harum (1967) Although initially lost in the flurry of psych/prog releases at year’s end, this is today recognized as an early classic in the genre. Album Rating: 4.0Yeah, I know that album. It's surely one of their most progressive one. A lot of the songs are harsh sounding and boring. ''Businessman'' is one of them, but again, it's not perfect. Sounds like some good Bob Dylan. I guess we just differ on how much the spoken passages bring it down. Album Rating: 2.5I agree with that, Jethro. Might still check it out. Will revisit for sure. What makes this really special are the 2 live discs. Musically tight. Reviews: Reviews : Reissues / repackagings / remasterings, often including interesting bonus tracks and exhumations, early versions, hitherto-unknown or abandoned songs, backing-tracks and so on: But as just an album (or as a Gary Brooker solo album, if you like), I'd give it a solid 2-1/2 stars. He must have felt suffocated by Gary Brooker's classical style. One thing I disagree with you is about the ''mediocrity'' of Something Magic. I'm quite surprised that on this site, the debut Procol Harum currently has a slightly higher rating than Shine On Brightly as I think this album is surely their masterpeice. My favorite song is easily ''The Only One''. ). But, despite the technical and aesthetic difficulties such a project presents (like not allowing the electric guitars to drown out the violins), In Concert proves to be both valid and interesting, if excessively fluffy at times. Review # 54. Great review. I've always been a huge fan of this band, so I'm not sorry I checked it out. By the way, check this song out, it might just be my favorite by PH. You might even add an extra 1/2 star if you're more of a fan of R&B than I am. Album Rating: 2.5I think we're pretty close on this one, Jethro. Grand Hotel might soon deserve the same score. The only real fun on this album is the opening track. Exotic Birds & Fruit was Procol Harum's seventh studio album, and it's my favorite release of theirs, post-1970's Home . I remember the record from '74 or so. @Irving Will listen to it but I'm not hurry. Album Rating: 4.0Totally. LIVE IN CONCERT WITH THE EDMONTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. After two fairly tepid albums (Exotic Birds & Fruit and Procol's Ninth), the band returns to the rich, creative melodies with orchestral colorings featured so prominently on 1973's Grand Hotel. The 1960s was a decade in which the Great Britain was dominated by the British Beat Boom, a time which pop music had exploded beyond popularity and reason. Both enjoyable songs, though I preferred the Traffic song by a bit. I'm delighted to hear something new however and I'm sure it'll grow on me. Album Rating: 4.0Your welcome bro. As a Procol Harum album, it rates no better than 1-1/2 to 2 stars. Album Rating: 2.0Took the words right out of my mouth. The album artwork is like a more positive interpretation of the debut. There is only one overtly "classical" moment here, and it’s a send up -- there's a direct quote from Pachelbel's Canon as a brief intro to the wonderful "Sunday Morning.” Some truly perverse lyric moments are expertly crafted into well-composed songs (would we expect anything less?
